Army formed a training team the AATV (Australian Army Training Team Vietnam) The Dirty Thirty aka The Team were to be assigned to Vietnam to train and advise the South Vietnamese Army and the Montagnards. The first to be assigned was Barry Petersen. A veteran of the Malaya conflict where he had worked with local tribes and elements of the US Marines, Captain Barry Petersen was assigned to Ban Me Thuot in the Darlac province Central Highlands Vietnam. His orders were vague but the mission simple , raise an army of local Rhade tribesmen and Eradicate the VC. Signed to the CIA,s Covert Action Branch he set out to raise that army, weapons & uniforms were ex WW2/Korea all supplied by the CIA. At his peak he led a 1200 strong force known as the Truong Son Force, they were so feared the VC called them the TIGERMEN, the CIA had green berets and metal tiger head hat badges made for them. The Montagnards loved Barry, he was their Dam San ( warrior leader ) and often went tribal,drinking rice wine with the locals. His affinity with the Rhades spooked the CIA so he had to go ( sound familiar ? ) He left in 65. Here is some outdoor shots i took in the back yard. Hope you like it, its pretty simple bash.
