“On 29 September, 24th Panzer Division renewed its assault, and by the end of the evening Solugub’s hard pressed 112th Division has retreated into the Silikat factory to the west of the Barrikady complex. To the immediate south, the German attack on the junction of the southern end of the Barrikady and the northern end of the Red October site had succeeded in driving a wedge between 112th Divisions left flank and the right flank of Smekhotvorov’s 193rd Division. This was a critical development for both sides; the Volga was just over one kilometer away and, if the Germans reached it, the heart of the 62nd Army would be ripped in two, enablng the Germans to bring the Red October’ lpant’s landing stage under fire. Chikov’s command post, behind the Barrikady Ordnance Factory, was in imminent danger from the west and the north.”

This dio represents a group of men from second company first Batallion / Panzergrenadier-Regiment 21, of the 24th Panzer Division as they coordinate the next attack towards the Volga, amongst the rubble of one of the structures in the Barrikady Industrial Complex.

The dio was inspired by a photograph on page 117 of “Campaigns of World War II; The Eastern Front: Barbarossa, Stalingrad, Kursk and Berlin, 1941-1945” by Duncan Andersdon, Lloyd Clark and Stephen Walsh, publised by MBI Publishing Company. Above text is from the same book.

The Oberwachmeister (cavalry rank equivalent to Oberfeldwebel, retained from when the 24th Pz Div was the 1st Cavalry Division), a member of the Company’s HQ section is coordinating the attack and is giving final instructions to the Unteroffizier who is platoon commander.

Before the snow, and before the encirclement, there were the desperate hand to hand actions in the city, as the German Army tried to reach the Volga and gain control of all the territory to the west of the river.
