Special Air Service Regiment
The Special Air Service Regiment is a special missions unit with unique capabilities within the Australian Defence Force.

Operating under the motto “Who Dares Wins” the Special Air Services Regiment (SASR) is a direct command unit of the Australian Special Operations Command with a demanding role. Members are specially selected and highly trained to act with discretion and discipline in situations that may have national and strategic consequences. Personnel are required to work in small teams for extended periods without support.

The SASR can trace its beginnings back to the Australian Z Special Unit and Independent Commando Companies that fought during World War II. On 25 July 1957, the 1st Special Air Service Company, Royal Australian Infantry was raised in Campbell Barracks in Western Australia. In 1964 the Company was expanded to a Regiment to become the Special Air Service Regiment.

The SASR is tasked to provide special operations capabilities in support of the Australian Defence Force. This includes providing unique capabilities to support sensitive strategic operations, special recovery operations, training assistance, special reconnaissance and precision strike and direct action.

Force elements from SASR have served in various major conflicts (including Borneo, Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraq) and provide support to peace enforcements and peacekeeping operations (including Rwanda, Somalia, Cambodia and East Timor). In addition to international operations, SASR remains prepared to meet domestic and offshore counter terrorism tasks.

The role of the 1st Commando Regiment (1 Cdo Regt) is to maintain and sustain a pool of suitable qualified Special Forces Full Time (FT) and Part Time (PT) military personnel and selected civilian personnel with niche skills and capabilities to command, support and reinforce Special Operations Command across the continuum of operations.

The Regiment is a composite of both regular and reserve soldiers who have become increasingly involved in operational deployments since 2000, providing small detachments and individuals to support Special Operations Command (SOCOMD) deployments in Bougainville, East Timor, the Solomon Islands, Iraq and Afghanistan. In 2008 the Regiment’s operational commitment took a step further with the deployment of a Commando Company Group (CCG) as part of the Special Operations Task Group (SOTG) over the winter period. This constituted the first deployment of an Army Reserve Force Element on combat operations since WWII, and the Regiment has continued to support this operational commitment with similar deployments each year since. 1 Cdo Regt reserve personnel have a broad range of employment within the civilian sector, including legal professionals, company CEOs, tradespeople, and engineers. 1 Cdo Regt personnel maintain the same base level commando skills as the regular commando capability and are positioned to provide short notice reinforcement in support of Special Operations Command operational and training actitivies.

The Regiment had its genesis in 1955, with the raising of 1 Commando Company in Sydney and 2 Commando Company in Melbourne. The two Commando Companies represented the first elements of Australian Special Forces to be re-raised after WW II . Initially, these companies were raised as independent Citizens Military Forces (CMF) Commando companies, and consisted of part-time CMF soldiers commanded, trained and administered by Australian Regular Army (ARA) staff. On formation the companies wore the common Army dark blue beret with the Rising Sun badge. In 1956 the traditional Sherwood Green Commando beret was adopted, to which was later added the Commando badge of a silver Sykes-Fairbairn dagger combined with a golden boomerang, bearing the motto ‘Strike Swiftly’. In 1960 the unit expanded further with the establishment of 301 Signals Squadron, a specialist communications support squadron based in Sydney. In 1964 the squadron was retitled as 126 Signals Squadron, and in 1966 it relocated to Melbourne under the title of 126 Signals Squadron (Special Forces).

All three sub-units continued to operate as independent CMF (re-titled The Australian Army Reserve in 1975) sub-units until they were combined under an ARA Regimental Headquarters to form the 1st Commando Regiment on 1st February 1981. In 1997, following the decision to re-role the 4th Battalion The Royal Australian Regiment (4 RAR) as the first Regular Commando unit, a Commando Training Wing (CTW) was raised from within 1 Cdo Regt, and was co-located with 1 Commando Company at Georges Heights in Sydney. The CTW conducted commando reinforcement training for 1 Cdo Regt and 4 RAR (Cdo) until the establishment of the Special Forces Training Centre in 1998. In 2000, 126 Signal Squadron transitioned to a fully ARA organisation and relocated from Melbourne to Holsworthy in order to be transferred to under command 4 RAR (Cdo). Its place was taken by 301 Signal Squadron, which was re-raised in 2002 in order to continue to provide integral communications support to 1 Cdo Regt.

The motto of the 1st Commando Regiment is ‘Strike Swiftly’.

The 2nd Commando Regiment is an Australian Army Special Forces unit; one of three combat-capable units within the Australian Special Operations Command. The regiment was established on 19 June 2009 when it was raised from the 4th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (Commando) (4 RAR (Cdo)).

The 2nd Commando Regiment's history stems from the decision in 1996 to convert 4 RAR, a light infantry battalion, into a Commando Regiment.  On 1 February 1997 4 RAR was renamed and re-roled as 4 RAR (Cdo) and commenced the development of Australia's first regular Commando capability.  This development was conducted through a period of continuous operational tasking with collective deployments to Solomon Islands, East Timor, Iraq and Afghanistan.  Throughout these operations the Regiment served with distinction, notably receiving the Unit Citation for Gallantry for its service as a part of the Special Operations Task Group in 2005-2006.

2nd Commando Regiment's new regimental badge was created to reflect the history and traditions of Australian Commandos and the offensive nature of the unit.  The centre feature of the badge is a silver Fairbairn-Sykes fighting knife, universally recognised as the symbol of a Special Forces unit, and is backed by the blackened double diamonds, representative of the felt colour patches worn on Australian Commando uniforms of WWII.  The regiments motto is included in a gold scroll ‘Foras Admonitio’, latin for 'Without Warning'.  The motto highlights not only the challenges of modern warfare, but the modus operandi of the 2nd Commando Regiment.

As of 01 February 2012, the 2nd Commando Regiment has lost eight of its soldiers KIA while deployed to Afghanistan and another during operational deployment preparation.  The Regiment is also supporting the recovery of up to 60 other soldiers who have been seriously wounded in battle or injured on operations and in training. Some of these soldiers will never return to full duty as Commandos.  Support to the families of the fallen and to our wounded and their families is a priority of the 2nd Commando Regiment.  For the 2nd Commando Regiment the Commando Welfare Trust is a key enabler to ensure the continued support of members and their families.  On joining the 2nd Commando Regiment a soldier and his family become Commandos for life.
