The common tent of the Civil War was the shelter half or dog tent. Each man carried a half so two could button together and make a full dog tent. Some soldiers found it not worth carrying the tent, and simply slept on their blanket.
When the order was given to make camp, the tents were laid out in company streets. The 'street' was where the men fell in for roll call, so it was kept clear of obtacles and debris.
At the end of company street was the mess area, the firepit, and a place where the soldiers congregated to eat, clean weapons, and pass the time.
