n 2005, the United States Marine Corps started the Infantry Automatic Rifle Program with the intentions of finding a lighter, more maneuverable weapon to replace the outdated M249 SAW light machine gun. The Marine Corps considered weapons from several well known manufacturers such as Heckler-Koch, FN, and Colt. In 2009 after several extensive trials had been completed, the Marine Corps selected the weapon designed by Heckler-Koch. A year later in May of 2010, the Marine Corps officially adopted the weapon and gave it the name M27 IAR.
